KIKUUBE: Local Govt to set laws on sugar cane growing in the district

KIKUUBE DISTRICT: After a long conflict between Hoima Sugar Limited and Kikuube/Hoima Sugar cane farmers, Kikuube District Local Government Leaders has promised to set laws governing sugar cane growers and Hoima Sugar.

Peter Banura the Kikuube District chairperson says these laws will address all the challenges associated with the sugar cane growing business so as to enable mutual benefits of all parties.

“With the introduction of these laws, both sugar cane growers and Hoima Sugar Limited shall abide by the set rules and regulations and hence smooth running of the business”. Peter Banura.

While addressing farmers at Sir. Tito Winyi playground in Kikuube town council Banura said he had received several complaints from various sugar cane farmers about the irregularities in Hoima Sugar Limited like high rate of corruption tendencies, delayed payment, and failure to harvest sugar cane on time among other challenges.

“We want to reduce the powers e the company and give a breath to farmers who have been mistreated by the company for a long time”. Banura added.

Meanwhile, Maxwell Isingoma the Hoima Sugar cane growers Association chairperson welcomed the idea and added that the introduction of these laws will help the poor people in the sugar cane business.
“I hope this is good news to we sugar cane growers who been have oppressed by the services of Hoima Sugar Limited for a long time”. Isingoma said.
