Hoima residents decry increased torture from security personnel enforcing Covid 19 measures

Minister Namuyangu responding to the concerns of Hoima city residents

HOIMA, UGANDA; Hon. Jennifer Kacha Namuyangu, the state Minister for Bunyoro Affairs has directed the Hoima city security committee to investigate security personnel enforcing Covid 19 measures who allegedly harass and assault residents.

Minister Namuyangu made the order following complaints from the locals of Hoima city who accused the officers of harassing them.

Edrine Kaikara one of the victims who is a resident of Kalyabuhire cell in Hoima city says her eye was hit by a stick that a security personnel was holding after she was arrested around 7pm while she was on the Boda Boda heading home.

“It was at around 7pm, I had left work heading home on a Boda Boda as we were almost reaching the Kalyabuhire stream near Kitara secondary School, we heard people alarming on my turn I show security personnel holding a stick and hit my eye and I started bleeding and up to now am still nursing eye”. Kaikara said.

Magret Monday the Hoima East Division female councilor says, security personnel enforcing the curfew are asking money from Boda riders.

“Security personnel have made it a habit to solicit money from Boda Bodas and not only the Boda Boda cyclists but also street vendors so please Hon. Minister, Hoima city RCC and the entire security committee team help us on this matter”. Monday said.

Minister Namuyangu in her response to the mentioned issues directed the Hoima city security committee to investigate all claims and have the officers prosecuted.

“I have noted that the security especially the police are harassing residents and I have seen the woman who was bitten terribly she almost lost an eye and this is very serious, I have also got information that they are getting money from the people especially the Boda Boda cyclists have become their garden so am directing the security committee especially the RCC to investigate this matter and the person who is responsible for torturing this lady must be worked upon”. Minister Namuyangu said.
