MITYANA, UGANDA: Mityana district authorities want the government to elevate Mityana General Hospital to a Regional Referral facility to effectively handle the high volume of patients.

Led by the Housing and Lands Minister, and former Mityana District Woman Member of parliament, Judith Nabakooba, the leaders have resolved to write to the health minister, the president, and the Prime Minister to show cause why the facility should be elevated to a regional referral.

According to Nabakooba, the statistics clearly show the need for elevating the hospital to a regional referral to effectively meet the needs of residents.

While touring the maternity section and the entire hospital over the weekend, Nabakooba said that they appreciated the situation at the hospital, the challenges, and how they can be addressed. According to Nabakooba, Mityana hospital is the second most visited facility by patients in Uganda next to Iganga hospital.

She also noted with concern the non-functional X-ray and the Ultra Sound scan machines at the facility, saying despite writing several letters to the line ministry nothing has been done. Nabakooba revealed that the Health Minister, Dr. Jane Ruth Acheng had asked her to submit the requirements for follow-up.

This comes hardly a week after Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja stormed the hospital to help an expectant mother who was looking for Shillings 400,000 to undergo an operation. On January 6, a family from Myanzi in Kassanda District ambushed Nabbanja on her way to Kampala to help them to pay Shillings 400,000 needed for the operation of Aldrine Kanyana.

Records show that Kanyana had triplets in her womb, but two of them were dead. Upon interrogation, the Hospital Administrator Paul Kabenge told Nabbanja that the National Medical Stores – NMS last delivered medicines to the facility in September last year, which prompted her to direct NMS to deliver medical supplies.

However, Mityana District Woman Member of Parliament, Joyce Bagala castigated such work methods, saying it unsustainable for the prime minister or any other government official to give money to individuals.

She also castigated the prime minister for telling the people of Mityana that they didn’t vote wisely in the just-concluded general election.

Mityana Hospital serves patients from numerous districts like Mubende, Kassanda, Gomba, Butambala, Kiboga, Kyankwanzi, Nakaseke, and Mityana.

It also handled emergency cases arising from accidents along Mubende Highway.
