Transport fares double as fuel prices spike upcountry

Edward Kagina a Boda Boda cyclist at Kisaru Boda Boda stage in Kyabasara trading centre in Kikuube District says that he has decided to park his motorcycle due to the fuel rise.

HOIMA, UGANDA: Transport fares in various routes in Bunyoro Region have been increased due to the rise in the price of fuel.
Currently, a litre of petroleum in various fuel pumps in Bunyoro Region is ranging from 10000/= to 15000/=.

Jackson Bigirwa a taxi driver on Hoima Kyangwali Road says he is now using 200000/= as fuel to enable him to transport passengers from Hoima city to Kyangwali and this has forced them to rise the transport fares from 25000/= to 40000/=.
“We have been told that fuel scarcity is a Worldwide problem, and therefore in order to continue with our services, we have to rise the transport fares because before fuel rise, we used 90000/= to fuel our cars but now if you want to go to Kyangwali in Kikuube District, you need 200000/=”. Mr. Bigirwa said.

Edward Kagina a Boda Boda cyclist at Kisaru Boda Boda stage in Kyabasara trading centre in Kikuube District says that he has decided to park his motorcycle due to the fuel rise.
“I have parked my Motorcycle due to the rise in fuel prices because right now, no passenger will allow you to overcharge him”. Kagina said.

He says that since it is ample time for farmers to prepare for the season, he has embarked on farming until the price of fuel lowers. Kagina however worries whether he will afford to raise school fees for his 3 children since he is left no immediate source of income.

Richard Turyatunga a wholesaler in Kikuube Town council says, as the business community, they also planning to increase the price on merchandise since the rise in fuel prices have also affected them in terms of transport.
“We are also going to increase the price on merchandise because the fuel price rise affects every business”. Mr. Turyatunga said.
