Novelist Kakwenza re-arrested moments after being granted bail

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Ugandan Novelist/Writer Kakwenza Rukirabashaija has been rearrested by planned clothed security operatives moments after court granted him bail.

Kakwenza who appeared before Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, was granted a cash bail of Shs500,000, and his Ssureties ordered to pay Shs 10 million noncash bail.

Court also barred Kakwenza from discussing matters in the media, asked to deposit his passport for a period of 6 months and ordered him to report back to court on 1st February 2022.

However, moments after being freed from Kitalya prison reports coming through indicate that Kakwenza has been rearrested by the military.

Reports suggest that at around 2:30 pm, men dressed in plain clothes allegedly pulled up Kakwenza while still at Kitalya Prison and picked him up again. The operatives were according to reports driving a numberless tinted double cabin.
