Environment activists urge Lands Ministry to resume boundary-reopening exercise of Bugoma Forest

The boundary opening exercise was halted after unknown people started uprooting pillars that were planted by the Ministry of Lands to show the forest boundary.

KIKUUBE, UGANDA: Environment activists under their umbrella”Save Bugoma Forest campaign” have reversed their request for the boundary opening for Bugoma Central Forest Reserve.

In their press release signed by the spokesperson of ‘Save Bugoma Forest Campaign’ Mr. Joshua Mutale, the environmentalists have written to the Minister of Lands Hon. Judith Nabakoba requesting for the boundary opening for Bugoma Forest which was halted in December last year.

The boundary opening exercise was halted after unknown people started uprooting pillars that were planted by the Ministry of Lands to show the forest boundary.

In a letter to the Ministry of Lands, the chairperson of the Save Bugoma Forest campaign Mr. Dickens Kamugisa says die the failure of the Ministry of Lands to comply with the agreed measures in the boundary opening exercise led to the failure of the campaign.

Mutale says, the organization has already received information that the boundary opening exercise is set to resume in the coming weeks and adds that in the meeting held between the organization and the ministry of Lands in February and November last year, the Ministry of Lands agreed to involve all stakeholders to witness the boundary opening exercise such as Local leaders, the save Bugoma Forest campaign members, private surveyors among others.
