Kai Havertz extra-time penalty hands Chelsea first-ever FIFA Club World Cup Title

Just like he did against Man City with a winning goal in the Champions League final, Havertz was called upon yet again to slot home a penalty late into extra time against the resilient Brazilians.

Chelsea’s £70million signing Kai Havertz netted an extra-time penalty to seal the club’s first-ever Club World Cup title as they beat Palmeiras 2-1 in the cup final on Saturday evening.

Striker Romelu Lukaku had put the Blues 1-0 up in the 55th minute with his powerful header from a Callum Hudson-Odoi cross but they were pegged back minutes later through a controversial penalty conceded by Thiago Silva.

Into extra time and after huffing and puffing from the European Champions, they finally blew the Palmeiras house done and one man in particular repeated a trick that was seen in Porto at the end of the last term.

Havertz, 22, hasn’t been a serial goal scorer since his much-anticipated move from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2020 but one thing that is ever-present in his game is his ability to step up in the big moments.

Just like he did against Man City with a winning goal in the Champions League final, Havertz was called upon yet again to slot home a penalty late into extra time against the resilient Brazilians.

After Cesar Azpilicueta won a penalty for his side with his snapshot inside the area, with no Jorginho on the pitch, it initially looked like the Spaniard was set to take the responsibility.

However, the Germany international took the ball and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to send the Chelsea fans into raptures.

His trick in scoring in finals again has resulted in delirium amongst the Blues fanbase who can now see why Abramovich splashed £70m on Chelsea’s number 29.
