JINJA, UGANDA: Kiira Regional Police Command have recovered a gun with 13 rounds of ammunition and as well succeeded in detaining the prime suspect at Jinja Central Police Station.

ASP James Mubi, Kiira regional police spokesperson identified the suspect as Peter Otem, 25, a former security guard at Wolves Security Group.

ASP Mubi says that on December 16, 2021, Otem went to Madda hotel in Jinja city and disguised as supervisor of Wolves security group. He instructed the private security guard on duty one Hillary Aluma to hand over his gun and Hillary complied with the purportedly fake instructions and handed over his rifle with 13 rounds of ammunition to the impersonator.

“On December 16, 2021, Otem went to Madda hotel in Jinja city and disguised as a supervisor of Wolves security group. He instructed the private security guard on duty one Hillary Aluma to hand over his gun and Hillary complied with the purportedly fake instructions and handed over his rifle no SR UG PSO 400086813452 with 13 rounds of ammunition to the impersonator,” Mubi said.

He confirmed that Hillary Aluma and others were arrested and put in custody awaiting prosecution.

However, Mubi says that Otem is a serial criminal who has frequently been arrested and released on bail but seems to have resisted reform and instead resorted to his old ways of robbing people.
“On February 18, 2022, Peter was given court bail, on the charge of theft of a mobile phone that occurred on December 22, 2021, but he didn’t reform instead resorted to his old ways of robbing people,” ASP James Mubi revealed.

Similarly, on February 26, this year Otem allegedly attacked the premises of his former company’s client at Kiira road in Jinja city and demanded for money and other precious belongings from the owner of the house while using the said illegal gun.

“Also on February 26, this year Otem allegedly attacked the premises of his former company’s client at Kiira road in Jinja city, demanded for money and other precious belongings from the owner of the house aided by the illegal gun,” Mubi said before adding that the evidence will be used against him in Court.

ASP Mubi urged all private security guards to avoid falling prey on such incidents by should seek inquiries from their bosses and other security offices before acting in similar ways.

“We want to urge all private security guards to always be vigilant at workstations. Someone should not just come claiming is from police, intelligence, UPDF, or any company and you accept what he or she is telling you,”

“You have your bosses with their phone contacts, you as well have our (police) telephone numbers so first inquire. Don’t just give out your gun anyhow,” Mubi said and assured the public that police will continue monitoring all private security companies to see if they are doing the needful in training their workers.

He also said that they will investigate whether these companies are supervising their workers once deployed.
“We have been doing this work but we shall just need to tighten in this exercise,” Mubi assured.

This has unveiled just after two weeks when unidentified assailants riding on motorcycles shot dead two siblings at Wairaka trading center in Kakira town council in Jinja district. Fred Bulago and John Nkabe met their death along the Iganga-Jinja highway in the evening of Saturday, February 12, this year.
