Five dead, scores injured in Mubende – Kakumiro road accident

Ms Racheal Kawala, the Wamala Region Police Spokesperson said the four occupants of the building died on spot while the fifth victim was confirmed dead on Thursday morning.

MUBENDE, UGANDA: The death toll in a motor accident that happened on Wednesday evening in Mubende has reached five after with more than 40 people injured.

Some of the deceased have been identified as Jacinta Katushabe, Harriet Ssembatya, and Nakibuuka, the rest were yet to be identified by press time.

The nasty car crash happened at 10 pm on Wednesday, March 2nd at Kanseera Village along the Mubende -Kakumiro Road after an ill-fated Fuso truck that was transporting market vendors veered off the road and rammed into a nearby building at around.

Ms Racheal Kawala, the Wamala Region Police Spokesperson said the four occupants of the building died on spot while the fifth victim was confirmed dead on Thursday morning.

According to police, the injured victims were mainly market vendors of Bivamuntuyo market traders group who were being transported back from the market by the Fuso vehicle.

 “It [lorry] was overloaded with market vendors and their luggage, the driver lost control and it overturned,” Kawala said Thursday afternoon

Kawala added that the truck driver who has only been identified as Mukisa escaped unhurt and is currently at large.

Mr Ponsiona Ssengeya, one of the survivors attributed the cause of the accident to the recklessness of the truck driver who was under the influence of alcohol.
“He (driver) was drinking beer while speeding. He lost control of the truck and rammed into the building,” he said
