Man shot attempting to ‘steal’ at police station

According to police, the victim was shot in the leg and disabled as he tried to steal spare from a taxi impounded at the station.

“The officer tried to stop the suspect by firing warning shots in the air, but in vain. He attempted to flee the scene with the tyre. This prompted the officer to shoot at the suspect on the left leg and disabled him.”

FORT PORTAL, UGANDA: A 23-year-old man in Fort Portal City is currently nursing a bullet wound after he was shot at while attempting to steal at Fort Portal Central Division police station.

The victim whose identities were not revealed was shot on Wednesday night by a Field Force Unit (FFU) officer while on night duty at the station.

According to police, the victim was shot in the leg and disabled as he tried to steal spare from a taxi impounded at the station.

“We have arrested one of the country’s unluckiest burglars. He attempted to steal from a police station and was stopped by a bullet. The suspected burglar walked to steal a spare tyre from an impounded taxi at Fort Portal central division station, but his mission was cut short,” reads a police report seen by this website.

The report adds; “It is alleged that while the FFU officer was alert on duty, he observed a thief who was stealing a spare tyre from a taxi, registration number UAW 073P, white in colour, which was parked next to the quarter guard.”

“The officer tried to stop the suspect by firing warning shots in the air, but in vain. He attempted to flee the scene with the tyre. This prompted the officer to shoot at the suspect on the left leg and disabled him.”

Police have since recovered exhibits (the tyre and a metallic rod) from the scene as investigations continue.

“There is a possibility that the suspect had planned for the theft as he calculated the movements of the station guard,” adds the Police report.

The victim is currently admitted at Buhinga Regional Referral Hospital, in Fort Portal as investigations continue.
