KAMPALA, UGANDA: Makerere University has with immediate effect suspended the Freshers’ Ball, Bazaars, porridge nights among other events citing student’s misconduct and violence.
The Freshers’ ball (the most popular of the suspended events) is a welcoming party organized for the new students at the start of every academic year.
In a meeting held on Monday, March 21, the Central Management Committee of the University resolved to suspend the events following a violent altercation that happened on Friday 18th March 2022 at the Fresher’s Ball at the Freedom Square.
In a letter signed by Winifred Kabumbuli, the Dean of Students, the University management stated that it cannot tolerate the incessant culture of violence that characterizes students’ social activities lately, particularly, Freshers’ Ball, Bazaars, and Porridge Nights.
“Violence has persisted at students’ social events despite various engagements and warnings to the students and their leaders. Regrettably, the violent altercations have resulted in injury to students and the destruction of property and the threat continues to grow.”
“Management resolved that the Freshers Ball, Porridge Nights, and Bazaars are suspended indefinitely and these activities shall no longer be permitted at the University until further notice,” the letter reads.
