Two Family Members killed by mob over Witchcraft

It is alleged that the two siblings were beaten to death by the angry mob on Friday at around 7 am near Nyarugando Health Center and their bodies later burnt to ashes at the scene.

RUKUNGIRI, UGANDA: Police in Rukungiri district is investigating circumstances under which two family members were killed by an angry mob accusing them of practicing witchcraft.

The deceased have been identified as Anet Kagyere, 51, and Katarihwa Naris, 48, both residents of Rwencweera cell, in Nyakagyeme Sub County, Rukungiri district.

It is alleged that the two siblings were beaten to death by the angry mob on Friday at around 7 am near Nyarugando Health Center and their bodies later burnt to ashes at the scene.

Banard Tibebwa, the Rwencweera LC1 chairperson, says the deceased were accused of witchcraft by the locals.

“People were angered by the death of a brother to the former Rukungiri woman MP Betty Muzanira whom they suspect to have been bewitched by the duo” Tubebwa said.

Elly Maate the Kigezi regional police spokesman confirms the incident and says that Police was notified and rushed to the scene. The police officers addressed the residents but no arrests were made.

The bodies were by presstime conveyed to Rwakabengo Health Center for post-mortem examination.
