KAMPALA, UGANDA: The National Unity Platform (NUP) is today set to vet eight candidates to choose who will carry the party’s flag in the upcoming Omoro County by-elections.
Speaking on Monday, Mr. Caesar Lubanga-Kene, the NUP deputy spokesman for Northern Uganda said the party was yet to choose a suitable candidate after several members expressed interest in vying for the seat on the NUP party ticket, adding that they expect to unveil their candidate today (Tuesday April 26).
The candidates to be vetted include businessman Charles Ochora, Simon Toolit (a former MP for Omoro) and Mr Okoth Abok Secondo. Others include Brian Odwar (an educationist), Flavia Apiyo (lawyer), Oscar Kiiza (lawyer), Denis Oluba, and Isaac Ojok.
The NUP candidate in the Omoro by-election will bring the total number of candidates interested in the seat to eight with NRM’s Andrew Ojok, the son of late Jacob Oulanyah seen as the likely winner of the May polls.
The candidates are Mr Denis Dick Owani, the FDC flag bearer, and his running-mate, Mr Terrence Odonga who chose to run as Independent, Andrew Olal, Francis Rwotlonyo, and Douglas Peter Okello, all from NRM, including Mr Godwin Okello (Ind), Julius Okello Opira (ANT), and Hillary Olweny (Ind).
The Omoro county seat fell vacant on March 20 following the death of former Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah in Seattle, USA. Oulanyah was the area MP from 2001 to 2005 and then from 2011 until his death.
The Electoral Commission earlier this month set the date for the by-election as May 26.
