KAMPALA, UGANDA: Uganda Police has finally opened up on the fire incident that gutted the office of Chief Justice Alfonso Owiny-Dollo at Supreme Court Chambers in Kampala.

The mysterious fire outbreak occurred at around 10 am, at the Supreme Court, located at Plot 10, Upper Hill, in Kololo but was quickly put out by the rapid and prompt response of the fire brigade unit.

According to earlier reports, the fire started when a woman opened the door next to the Chief Justice’s chambers and switched on the light, which triggered a blast.
The sources claimed that the fire had destroyed a number of vital documents in the chambers, especially in the Chief Justice’s office.

However, Police spokesperson CP Fred Enanga said only the AC and some furniture got burnt in the ‘quickie’ fire, and refuted claims that loads of documents and vital files were destroyed.

“We are grateful that there were no injuries or lives lost. Only furniture and the AC system, inside the Chambers, got burnt. We want to greatly thank the firefighters, for saving the multi-billion complex and other properties in the building from getting burnt,” said Enanga in a Wednesday afternoon statement.

He added that a team of forensic experts led by the Director of Criminal Investigations Department – CID visited the scene to establish the cause of fire, after which a report will be released accordingly.

“The Director of CID, visited the scene with a team of experts from Forensics, Fire and Rescue, Electrical Engineers and Consultants to establish the cause of fire. A report revealing their findings will be released accordingly,” he said.

Enanga further added; “We call upon the public to remain calm and further remind them to adopt better fire detection and protection measures. Remember fire can start anywhere and anytime. It is therefore, everyone’s role to fight fires.”
