LUUKA, UGANDA: A section of women in Luuka district have received up to 12,000 improved banana suckers from Luuka Patriots Association (LUPA) to boost their agricultural needs.
The banana suckers distribution exercise was launched on Tuesday at a function presided over by Busoga Kingdom First Deputy Prime Minister, Prof Dr. Muhammad Lubega Kisambira, who is also the patron of the association.
Dr. Lubega said that they are giving out 10 banana suckers to every woman and they will benefit 100 women in every sub-county of the 12 sub-counties that makes up Luuka district. He also noted that 4,400 suckers were delivered on Tuesday and they will deliver the remaining 8,000 banana suckers by Monday next week.
“I am happy to inform you that for Allah’s wish, we have managed to bring 4,400 suckers and we expect to bring the remaining 8,000 suckers on Monday which will cost us a total of 18 million shillings altogether. We prefer wealth which flows from one person to the other, therefore, we expect every beneficiary to return some suckers after one year which will benefit others and the cycle continue,” Lubega confirmed.
Lubega appealed to the residents of Luuka to always focus at work for self-reliance than depending on politicians, saying politicians are unable to satisfy everyone’s needs since they also bear personal challenges.
“We are doing this as LUPA because we know it’s the way to support people in Luuka. I assure you all, men and women in the district that we have a task to learn how to work”.
“You will continue abusing politicians, you will change them, you will curse them, you will hate them more if you want them to support your lives directly. Your life belongs to you and they also have their lives and they can’t satisfy everyone, what I am advising you is to work for yourselves,” Dr Lubega said, adding that; “LUPA started with youths whose mindset was sitting and waiting for who will give them money, when you give them money they clap cheerfully and when you don’t give them, they abuse you and wait for you in the next campaigns.”
Lubega urged the beneficiaries to take care of the banana suckers and as well prepare a good field instead of mixing them with other species.
The District Production Officer Luuka district, Mr Musena Aggrey commended the leadership of the association for supporting government in changing lives of people.
“LUPA has brought banana suckers for us and I want to appreciate your systematic move which has caused a difference. They are starting with 10 suckers for an individual which is a good number to take care of, i urge you to take care of these suckers and benefit,” Mr Musena said.
The chairperson of LUPA, ASP Isanga Richard Kawowo commended the district leadership for working with them to register the association after alleged interferences from some people in Luuka. He said that they are aiming at development and says that anyone fighting the development brought by LUPA will experience a similar opposite force.
“I want to appreciate Luuka district local government right from the RDC who supported us overwhelmingly since other people tried to fight us and these developments. This association is now fully registered and our work is extremely evidence-based after giving out welding machines to youths in some town councils, construction of staff quarters at Kiyunga health center IV, among other programs”.
“We appreciate all people especially leaders who have welcomed us with open hands and we assure you that whoever tries to fight LUPA will be dealt with,” ASP Isanga said.
This exercise was fully supported by LUPA, an association which was developed on a non political basis to uplift people’s well-being in the district.
The function launch attracted many leaders who included LC 3 chairpersons in Luuka, LC 1 chairpersons, program coordinators, women from various sub counties in Luuka, among others.
The chairperson of chairpersons LC 3 Luuka district who doubles as the LC 3 chairperson Bulongo sub county appreciated the association and commended the association patron Prof Dr Lubega for always emphasizing development.
However, the chairperson LC 1 Kiyunga central zone who doubles as the chairperson of chairpersons LC 1 said “a well off person should have food at home and we trust these women in this exercise. Dr Lubega we are appreciative but we request you to help us in coordinating district staff to support development because our district workers don’t love Luuka and this has crippled development. When you love Luuka, we shall also come out and push our district on map”.
