Dr Muganga further noted that in Uganda, they need to deeply reflect on the new digital era, which now defines the new media.
“This implies that there are more players in the media; journalists and non-journalists, which raises an issue of the quality of journalism, professionalism of journalists and how this may affect the democratic process of the country; an issue I will raise in my address, this evening,” the VC stated.

“We all, appreciate the role of journalists in helping and supporting the growth of democracies, and it is rightly called the fourth Pillar of democracy; the Fourth Estate; the others being the legislature, executive, and judiciary. To accomplish its mandate, the media is expected to disseminate political information, to be used by voters in making informed decisions. The media also helps identify the problems in our society and serves as a medium for deliberation. It (Media) is also expected to serve as watchdogs that we rely on for uncovering mistakes and wrongdoings by those who have power.”
