20 dead, several injured in Fort Portal Link Bus Accident

Traffic Police’s Nampiima noted that the casualties have been rushed to Buhinga hospital for first aid while the dead are at the same hospital for postmortem.

FORT PORTAL, UGANDA: At least twenty (20) people have so far been confirmed dead, with several injured after a Link Bus traveling to Kampala overturned along Fort Portal highway on Wednesday morning.

The fatal accident happened at around 10:30 am, at a place called Sebitoli, 2 kilometers from Fort Portal City.

According to Traffic Police spokesperson, Ms. Faridah Nampiima, “so far 20 people have been confirmed dead, out of whom 13 are adults while 7 are juveniles. Out of the twenty, 11 are male and nine are female,” she said, adding that particulars of the deceased will be availed in due course.

According to eyewitness at the scene, the bus swayed off the highway and rammed into the Sebitoli tea estate before overturning several turns.

The eyewitness further asserts that the cause of the accident was likely due to overspeeding from the bus driver, who is reported to be among the fatalities recorded.
