Ex-Rakai District Chairman shoots self dead

According to the southern regional police spokesperson, Mr Muhammad Nsubunga, the deceased had a legally acquired pistol and police have already recovered it from the crime scene.

RAKAI, UGANDA: Mr. Emmanuel Kamunana, the former Rakai District LC5 Chairperson has died after allegedly shooting himself.

The incident according to Lyatonde police happened on May 7 at around 5am at his home in Nsiika Village,Buyanga Parish, Mpumudde Sub county in Lyantonde District.

Southern regional police spokesperson, Mr. Muhammad Nsubuga confirmed Kamunana’s death and said a gun of pistol type (allegedly acquired by the deceased) was recovered from the scene of crime where he was found lying in a pool of blood.

Upon arrival, Nsubuga says police managed to rush Kamunana to Lyantonde General Hospital but was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival.

Nsubuga said that the deceased had a long illness which might have spiked depression and distress leading to the suicidal act.

“The wife told our detectives that Mr Kamunana had a long illness which could have led to depression. He woke up at 5am and went to the sitting room where he shot himself,” he said.

Brief Profile and Background

Kamunana was a prominent livestock farmer in Mpumudde County and a founding member of the Kabula Farmers’ Cooperative Society.

The late Kamunana joined politics as a councillor for Mpumudde Sub County before Lyantonde District was carved out of Rakai District.

Between 1992 and 1994 he became the Rakai District vice chairperson under the leadership of Muwanga Kamagu and when his boss died, he took over as acting chairperson from 1994-1998 when Joseph Mulindwa Mukasa took over.
