Police arrest woman filmed assaulting son over Shs5000 note

The woman who appeared in the viral video assaulting her 10-yer-old son over Shs5000 note has finally been arrested. The suspect has been identified as Deborah Apolot.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: The woman who appeared in the viral video assaulting her 10-yer-old son over Shs5000 note has finally been arrested. The suspect has been identified as Deborah Apolot, a resident of Kisasi-Kanisa zone, a Kampala suburb.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson in a Tuesday police statement said; “Following the viral video that shows a woman assaulting a child, the police at Kira Road Police Station arrested Deborah Apolot for allegedly assaulting her 10-year-old son Mark Omiat,”

He added that the victim sustained serious injuries and he is currently receiving treatment as police investigate the circumstances surrounding the gruesome torture.

What exactly happened?

According to the police statement, Apolot says on the fateful day, she gave the Shs5,000 note to Omiat to buy groceries at the shop, but the boy didn’t return home.

After a thorough search for the boy, Apolot says she found him hiding after misusing the money. She adds that the boy admitted for his wrong and accepted being beaten as a punishment for misbehaviour.

The incident was captured on camera by the neighbours, who later informed the police leading to her arrest on Monday, at about 9pm.

Owoyesigyire noted that after thorough investigations surrounding the incident, the victim’s mother will be arraigned in court and charged with child torture.
