Man shot dead for stoning police officer at New taxi park

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police in Kampala has launched investigations into circumstances under which a man at New Taxi Park in Kampala was shot dead after allegedly pelting an officer with stones.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesgyire, the incident happened on Friday night, May 13 2022 at around 11pm.

“It is alleged that while police officers were on a patrol vehicle that had parked in the New taxi park, an unidentified person hit an officer, Police Constable Lambat Ekomut with a stone,” Owoyesigyire said in a Saturday police statement.

Owoyesigyire explained that the unidentified suspect fled and entered a nearby drainage channel but was later pursued and caught by PC Ekomut and his colleagues, but during his arrest, a scuffle ensued which led to the suspect being shot at in the stomach.

Owoyesgyire said; “It is alleged that PC Ekomut caught up with the suspect and attempted to arrest him. A scuffle ensued, which led to an officer discharging a bullet. The bullet reportedly hit the suspect, whose particulars were not readily available by the time of filing this story, in the stomach. He later succumbed to the bullet wound.”

“An inquiry into the shooting incident is ongoing. The gun suspected to have been used during the incident has been recovered and submitted for analysis. Efforts are underway to identify the victim. More details will be availed as soon as possible,” he added .
