Two dead, five injured as NUP campaign team suffers horrible accident in Kumi

The team of about seven people was headed to Omoro District to join the party’s flagbearer, Simon Toolit Akecha in canvassing for votes when the unfortunate incident happened.

KUMI, UGANDA: Two members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) have been confirmed dead, with five others injured after the car they were travelling in overturned along Pallisa -Kumi road on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased include Mr. Denis Waiswa, the NUP mobilized and former Iganga Municipality MP candidate, and Mr. Yakub Kiggundu, the LC III councilor for Kazo Angola A in Kawempe Division, Kampala who died on the spot.

The five people injured and currently hospitalized include a BBS TV journalist, Amon Kitamirike, and four others who were unidentified by press time.

The NUP said in a Saturday statement that the campaign team of about seven people was headed to Omoro District to join the party’s flagbearer, Simon Toolit Akecha in canvassing for votes when the unfortunate incident happened.

“The National Unity Platform has learnt with great sadness and shock, of an accident that occurred on the road towards Kumi from Iganga, involving some of our comrades. The car was traveling to Omoro to join our campaign team. We have so far learnt that two of our comrades and leaders, Waiswa Denis from Iganga and Yakub Kiggundu from Kawempe, have passed on,” NUP said in a statement posted via the party’s official social media accounts.

When contacted for a statement on the incident, East Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson Oscar Gregory Ageca said police was still compiling facts and a statement would come out soon regarding the casualties of the Saturday afternoon crash.

The elections to fill the Omoro County Member of Parliament position will take place next week on Thursday 26th May 2022.
