KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police in Kampala has arrested the leader of the people’s Front for Transition Rtd. Col. Dr Kizza Besigye after he beat security deployed at his home in Kasangati to launch “Muzuukuke” protests against rising prices of fuel and essential commodities in the country.
The four-time presidential runner-up was Tuesday morning arrested at Arua Park, in Kampala for what police described as disrupting of business activities in the central business district.
The former FDC president had arrived in the city with megaphones mounted on his car, calling on people to ‘wake up and protest the skyrocketing commodity prices.”
Clad is his checked blue shirt, Besigye told to the following multitude, “We need to fight this war and make sure that the crisis of high prices is dealt with. You have to liberate yourselves including these police officers; these don’t even what to eat. They don’t sleep well,” he said as Police officers watched on, before they towed his vehicle.
While addressing the country on Sunday, President Museveni said the government is not willing to reduce on the taxes or subsidizing essential goods such as fuel saying this would lead to a hemorrhaging of Uganda’s foreign exchange reserves and also severely affect the national budget through tax revenue shortfalls.
However, after his address, Dr. Besigye on Monday moved out to hold protests in Kampala but was arrested near his residence in Kasangati alongside opposition MPs Anna Adeke and Joan Alobo in Kasangati Trading center by the anti-riot police personnel.
By the time of filing this story, the four-time presidential contender had been whisked away to the Central Police Station.
