KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police and the Joint military force in Kampala has arrested 26 suspects over the death of Major Joseph Mukuraine, a UPDF officer who was found lying lifeless inside a hotel room at a guest house in Kampala.
Mukuraine, 44, who at the time of his death was manager of UPDF Wazalendo SACCO, Entebbe branch was on Friday morning found dead in a bathroom at Birunga Lodge in Kiwatule – Nakawa division a Kampala suburb.
Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson Mr. Patrick Onyango confirmed the arrest of the suspects and said these have been detained by the security forces to aid in investigations on the cause of the officer’s death.
“Yes, the 26 suspects were arrested through a joint security agencies operation to help in investigations. We are screening them using fingerprints picked from the screen and surface touches at the scene- and using the CCTV footage that was picked from the hotel,” said Onyango.
It is alleged that Maj. Mukuraine booked to stay at the guest house for three days on Wednesday evening, but on Thursday morning, he left the room briefly and instructed management not to give away his room as he would later return in the evening.
However, on Friday morning, the management became skeptical when the cleaner notified them that the Major was not opening his room for usual room service only, and when they broke into the house, he was found dead in the bathroom.
“He was discovered dead in his bathroom. The cause of death is not yet established but the case is under inquiry,” Onyango explained.
Separate reports indicate that upon notifying authorities of the officer’s death, military trucks stormed the hotel premises and soldiers rounded up whoever was at the scene and took them to an unknown destination to help with the investigations.
This website has also learnt that Major Mukuraine before leaving Entebbe where he was the manager of Wazalendo, a UPDF SACCO reportedly signed for Ugx 24 million which was found missing at the scene of crime.
The body of the deceased was by press time conveyed to the city mortuary at Mulago for post-mortem as police investigate the cause of his death.
