EUGENE, USA: Ugandan long-distance runner Joshua Cheptegei has won the men’s 5000m race during exciting Day One action of the Eugene Diamond League (DL) in Oregon, USA.
Cheptegei finished the race in 12:57:99 at the Prefontaine Classic as he fell short of breaking his own world record of 12:35:36 that he set in Valencia (2020).
The 5000m Olympic medalist beat Milkesa Mengesha, who finished second at 13:01.11, while Daniel Ebenyo came third after posting 13:10.61.
He will be back at the same venue in eight weeks’ time looking to create a special chapter of 2022 by defending his world 10000m title during the Oregon World Championships at the Hayward Field in Eugene, USA.
