Security Guard arrested over murder of Masindi Journalist

According Hakiza, the victim allegedly went straight to where cartons of sodas were and picked four of them without permission and was shot in the chest by the guard on duty

MASINDI, UGANDA: Police in Masindi has arrested Ekou Simon, a 38-year-old security guard working with Blue whale security company ltd for shooting dead a journalist last night at a Coca-Cola depot, Masindi branch, Central division in Masindi District.

The deceased identified as Gerald Aseera was a journalist attached to Kings Broadcasting Services {93.6 Kings Fm}.

ASP Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson confirmed Ekou’s arrest and said he is being held at Masindi CPS to aid in the investigations leading to the shooting incident.

According to Hakiza, “It is alleged that on 01/06/2022 at around 0030/c, the suspect while armed and on normal duty at a Coca Cola Depot along Persey Street, saw the victim identified as Aseera Gerald, a news anchor at Kings Broadcasting services in the same area, gaining entry in the coca-cola compound through the main entrance that has no gate. The victim allegedly went straight to where cartons of sodas were and picked four of them. However, as he was leaving, the suspect shot him in the chest.”

Hakiza added that upon hearing of the shooting, police responded to the scene but the victim succumbed to injuries before reaching the hospital.

“Police were informed, immediately responded, and took the victim to Masindi Hospital under critical condition. Unfortunately, he succumbed to the injuries,” Hakiza said.

He further revealed a rifle number UG. PSO21008209637 and three rounds of ammunition were also recovered from the suspect and exhibited at Masindi central police station as investigations deepen.
