KAMPALA, UGANDA: The Electoral Commission (EC) has set Thursday 28th July 2022 for the election of a new Soroti East Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) in Soroti City will be conducted.
The Soroti East seat fell vacant after the Court of Appeal on May 24 annulled the election of FDC’s Mr. Moses Okia Attan and ordered for a fresh election.
“Polling for Member of Parliament and Municipality Directly-elected Councillor shall take place on Thursday 28th July 2022 at all polling stations in Soroti East Constituency, and (polling) shall start at 7:00 am and close at 4:00 pm,” the EC tweeted yesterday.
According to the released roadmap, the nomination of candidates will be conducted on Monday, July 18, and Tuesday, July 19 at the office of the city returning officer in Soroti City. This will be followed by campaign meetings for candidates from July 21 to July 26. Elections will be held on Thursday, July 28, 2022, starting from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.
The EC Chairman, Justice Simon Byabakama in a Monday press statement said the update of the National Voters’ Register for the said elections will take place from June 10 to June 14 and asked those intending to change location and first-time voters to ensure that are registered before the mentioned dates.
“The Commission has appointed Tuesday, June 14, 2022, as the cut-off date for registration of voters in the Constituency. Registration and transfer of voters from one polling station to another within Soroti East constituency will not be conducted after this date,” he said.
“I wish to emphasise that a credible electoral process is largely a multi-stakeholder responsibility. All stakeholders should, therefore, take keen interest in the processes and commit to ensuring an enabling environment that enhances participation at all levels. We further appeal to you to promote peaceful conduct during your mobilisation for the above electoral activities,” he added.
Justice Byabakama warned those intending to take part in the election against violence and called for peace, unity and respect to ensure a smooth and peaceful election process. “We urge you to preach peace, unity, tolerance, respect for divergent views, and acceptance of the outcome or resorting to peaceful resolution of emerging electoral related conflicts through Courts of Law,” he emphasized.
