KAMPALA, UGANDA: The management of Midland High School Kawempe has opened up on the viral bus video making rounds on social media saying those were not their students but belonged to Lubiri High School who hired the bus on Friday, June 10, 2022.
The video which appeared to have been captured by passersby in Kampala shows the school bus labeled Midland High School on standstill in traffic gridlock. However, through the transparent windows, a couple of female students are seen engaged in harvesting beans, totally unbothered by what those looking at them are saying. For as long as the bus is moving, the youthful students are keen on continuing with their business.
On social media, those who have watched the video have expressed mixed reactions. Some have condemned the act and called on first lady Janet Kataaha Museveni’s Ministry of Education and Sports to do something to stop the vice.
In response to the shocking incident, FX Kyasa, the headteacher of Midland High School strongly condemned the manner in which the students conducted themselves before disowning them as his students but those of Lubiri High School who hired the school bus for an agricultural trip to Jinja.
“We, Midland High School, have very, unfortunately, been appraised of happening on our school bus hired by another school (Lubiri High School) for an agriculture tour to Jinja on Friday, 10th June 2022. Those were not students of our school,” FX Kyasa said in a Friday statement shortly after the video went viral.
To support his statement, the headteacher posted a Sh1m receipt issued to Lubiri High School for hiring their school bus for the Jinja trip, before emphasizing that Midland high school is built on a very strong Christian foundation and such behaviours are highly uncalled for.
“Midland High School is built on a very strong Christian foundation and strongly condemns the behaviours of this kind. We very rigorously control our learning environment to ensure behaviours of this kind do not thrive,” he added.
The headteacher further reiterated that the school has been and will continue hiring out their bus time and again but it was an oversight not to screen the users.
“We will support or bus-hire customers to ensure they manage this very unfortunate incident in the most appropriate manner. Our bus hire services will continue with a more rigorous screening of our clients and their on-bus passenger management,” he said.
By press time, the management of Lubiri High School in Mengo was yet to issue a statement on the viral video.
