How police tracked down, arrested two thugs in guest house celebrating sh200m robbery

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police in Jinja have arrested two suspects after reportedly stealing sh283 million from the finance manager of Victoria Nile Plastics Ltd.

The suspects have been identified as Godfrey Isanga, a resident of Bukatuube in Mayuge district, and Patrick Kiiza, a resident of Iganga on Kaliro road.

According to Kira Region Police Spokesperson, ASP James Mubi, the thugs were trailed and arrested at Rainbow Guest House at Wakitaka, Jinja City where security found celebrating from a guest house in Jinja city.

“The two thugs traveling in a Toyota Wish registration number UBA 032N, which has since been impounded, trailed Mr. Bhven Prajapati and a colleague as they returned to the factory in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District from Baroda Bank, Jinja Branch. However, upon reaching one of the washing bays, along Kayunga Road, they blocked them using their car Toyota Wish UBA 032N and robbed them of their money totaling to sh283m,” ASP Mubi said.

According to Mubi, the victim, Mr. Prajapati reported the matter to Jinja Central Police Station who immediately started tracking the culprits using the Global positioning system (GPS) that had been placed in the bag which contained the money, and these were found at Rainbow Guest House in Wakitaka on the Jinja-Kamuli Highway, where they were allegedly found feasting on beers.

Mubi added that an AK-47 assault rifle belonging to the UPDF with serial number UG-UPDF-UH-3113, 27 rounds of live ammunition, a hammer, pair of pliers and an unknown chemical were also recovered from the hotel room.

The police PRO said they managed to recover only sh77m of the sh283m before adding that upon concluding investigations, the suspects, currently being detained at Jinja Police Station, will be charged with aggravated robbery and possession of illegal firearms under case reference CRB569/2022.
