Aloysious Chemutai, 27, who is attached to Kakiika prison commonly known as Kyamugorani in Mbarara, shot and killed on Monday night

MBARARA, UGANDA: A prison warder has shot dead his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself.

Aloysious Chemutai, 27, who is attached to Kakiika prison commonly known as Kyamugorani in Mbarara, shot and killed on Monday night prison wardress Magdalena Adong, 24, attached to the Uganda Prison Academy and Training School in Luzira.

Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi region police spokesperson, says that Adong travelled to Mbarara over the weekend to visit Chemutai, his longtime lover. According to the preliminary police investigations, the two developed a misunderstanding, which resulted in a quarrel in Chemutai to shoot Adong before turning the gun on himself.

He says that police found the killer weapon SMG Rifle No. UG PRI 49001094-01247 with 24 rounds of ammunition and three cartridges at the crime scene. The deceased’s bodies are lying at Mbarara regional referral hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.

Frank Baine, the Uganda Prisons spokesperson, says the incident is unfortunate for the force describing it as a relationship gone wrong. He says this is the third incident within the service with the last one happening in November 2021 when a prison warder Fred Walukauo shot and killed his wife Eunice Abenaitwe in Mpigi district.
