MARACHA, UGANDA: The regional police in West Nile have cancelled the bond of four top Maracha district officials and rearrested them over shs 1.9 billion seed school cash.
The officials identified as district engineer Timothy Ezati, district education officer Flavia Osua, environment officer Nola Avako, and internal auditor Paulo Abiribale Titia have been detained at West Nile Regional Police headquarters in Arua city.
West Nile Police spokesperson Josephine Angucia said on Wednesday (June 15) that the bonds were cancelled because of the gravity of the matter.
The officials are accused of abuse of office and mismanaging sh1.9b meant for the construction of Kololo Seed Secondary School in Maracha.
According to the school’s headteacher, George Yiki Adabo, all the works have stalled as the contractor abandoned the site.
Adabo says he wrote a letter to the district over the stalled works on June 10, last year, but instead, he received threats from the district officials.
Allegations
The district officials are alleged to have mismanaged the sh1.9b meant for the construction of the secondary school.
According to whistleblowers, the construction stalled, and it has not been done to the recommended level.
Angucia said the Police would also summon the contractor who undertook the construction of the infrastructure works.
Recently, the Police picked their CID officer for Maracha over allegations of tipping off the district officials over plans to arrest them.
This allegedly made the officers hide for some time delaying their arrest.
The CID officer whose name the Police have withheld is still under police custody at Arua CPS.
The matter came to the limelight when whistleblowers tipped education ministry officials about the stalled work at Kololo Seed Secondary School.
