MAYUGE, UGANDA: There was grief and shock on Tuesday after residents of Ivugunyu village, Buwolya parish, Buwaaya sub county in Mayuge district discovered a body of 16-year-old lady dumped in a sugarcane plantation.

The deceased has been identified as Aidah Hafuswa, a senior three student at Bunya secondary school in Mayuge district.

According to preliminary investigations, it is alleged that Hafuswa was killed by his boyfriend Kabalaasi Ashiraf, 20, who is also a student at the same school and in the same class.

The deceased reportedly sought permission from school on June 16, to go home citing that she was sick but didn’t get home.

Residents have since condemned the act of murder. Wambi Abdul Swamadu said that it’s unfortunate to kill someone especially when someone has been like a wife.

“I condemn this act and urge all youths to know that blood of a human being is not like the one of chicken that anyone can play with it. Someone who has been your lover and even made her like a wife by moving together, eating together, why to reach this extent,” Wambi questioned before saying that he heard information that the deceased has been visiting the boyfriend at his rented room before going to school.

The director of Skyline Education Center in Mayuge, Abdul Fazari Elijah urged all children to study and avoid involving in relationships which he said are a source of danger to learners.

“This is what we tell children everyday and to every child seeing this, please mind so high to study if you’re taken to school. We tell children to avoid relationships, now they have been knowing the murderer as her boyfriend. If they take you to school please study,” Mr Elijah said.

The chairperson LC 3 Buwaaya sub county, Kamaali Hussein said that the deceased and the suspect who is still at large were yesterday (Monday) at Mayuge central police station after developing a misunderstanding connected to a cellphone.

“At CPS Mayuge, we got information that these two were at police when the boy was accusing the girl for taking his phone and they reportedly exchanged obsene words at police before they advised them to report back today. But before today morning, the boy has allegedly killed the girl,” says Kamaali.

He however, condemned the act of renting for children and emphasized that atleast parents should strive and put all children in boarding section instead of renting for them. “As a leader I condemn the act where parents are renting rooms for children. You leave them to loiter in town, you don’t even check on them. It’s better you put your child in boarding than renting for him or her in a trading center,” Kamaali added.

Busoga East Police Spokesperson SP Diana Nandawula confirmed the incident amidst condemning the brutal act of murder. Nandawula says that the hunt is on to have the suspect apprehended and prosecuted.
