KAMPALA, UGANDA: Court in Nakawa division, Kampala has sent to jail a city lawyer after being found guilty of obtaining money amounting to 18 million shillings by pretense.
Presiding over the case on Friday, June 24, Nakawa court chief magistrate Elizabeth Akullo convicted Ernest Rukundo of the crime and sent him to Luzira prison awaiting sentencing on Tuesday, next week.
Akullo ruled that a state attorney from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mariam Kulusum, has adduced incriminating evidence against the lawyer beyond a reasonable doubt.
“Having considered the prosecution evidence, I find that the offense of obtaining money by pretense has been proved against the accused person beyond reasonable doubt and I hereby convict him as charged,” the magistrate ruled.
Prosecution alleges that between September 25, and October 23, 2017, Rukundo went in the areas of Namanve in Mukono and Kamwokya in Kampala with intent to defraud and obtained sh18.3m, pretending he was going to pay stamp duty for the execution of title in the name of Sagu Uganda Limited.
The magistrate, however, noted that there was no evidence of the payment of stamp duty by the lawyer.
According to their website, Sagu Uganda is a private/company limited by shares incorporated on December 16, 2015.
