KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police in Mukono together with the Flying Squad Unit have arrested a prime suspect behind the mastermind supermarket robbery, bringing the total suspects to three who have so far been arrested as investigations continue to unearth the deadly racket of thugs in the municipality.
On Friday June 24, two men armed with guns raided Spice Supermarket located in Mulago cell, Ntaawo Ward in Mukono Municipality and shot one Irene Sekandi, the cashier before making away with a bag containing an unspecified amount of money.
In an incident that was captured on one of the supermarket CCTV cameras, the two thugs who police later identified as Mugalu William 24, and Mbogo Sam 23 armed with two guns and heads covered with masks first disarmed the security guard, forcing him to lie on the ground before forcing the cashier to stuff money into their bag.
These according a police statement by Forces Spokesperson Fred Enanga were arrested and detained at Mukono division police pending further investigations.
Now on Tuesday morning, the Police Crime Intelligence Directorate confirmed that the third suspect behind the robbery, a one Kirumira Ramathan was arrested from his home in Kitete Village, Ggulu Ward in Mukono Municipality.
Kirumira according to operatives from the Crime Intelligence was arrested with key evidence including a gun recovered from his car boot, and other items believed to have been used in the robbery attack.
Following the armed robbery incident, police officers from the Criminal Investigations Division, forensics, Counter-Terrorism, Flying Squad, and CCTV cameras focused on the matter in a bid to help get the suspects.
“The officers with the help of CCTV cameras from private buildings and Police Cameras were able to trail the assailant’s movements,” says a police source who preferred to keep anonymity as the matter is still under investigation.
The source further divulged to this website that with aid of the CCTV Cameras in the area, the officers trailed the two suspects’ movements up Kirumira’s home in Kitete from where the gun used in the robbery was recovered hidden in the boot of a Toyota Corona registration number, UAD 728Y as well as pangas suspected to have been used in committing other crimes.
Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime and pledged to cooperate with police in unearthing more details in regards to crimes in Mukono and the surroundings.
The development comes at the backdrop of another robbery attack in Mukono on Saturday, June 25, in which a group of armed thugs (six in number) raided the house of one Goretti Kahasha, a cashier working with Regal Paints, and made away with property worth millions including a Toyota Wish car.
Fred Enanga, the force’s spokesperson, on Monday, said Police in Mukono were on a manhunt for the deadly gang that has recently been reported terrorizing residents of Mukono, and the neighboring areas.
Enanga also advised business owners to always connect their CCTV cameras and other security systems including alarms to the police systems for quick response in case of any attacks.
