KAMPALA, UGANDA: The police in Kampala Metropolitan has revealed following a spate of robberies in Mukono Municipality, several items including a gun have been recovered as operations to pacify the area.
According to KMP deputy police spokesperson, Mr. Luke Owoyesigyire, the Directorate of Crime Intelligence and Flying Squad Unit on Tuesday recovered a motor vehicle registration number UAD 728Y, a dark grey Toyota Corolla from home of one Kirumira Ramathan, the key suspect in the Spice Supermarket robbery.
He says upon searching the boot of the vehicle, the scene of crime officers found a submachine gun loaded with three live ammunition wrapped in a yellow polythene sack.
“The team also found four sharp pangas, a sharp steel knife, two pairs of scissors, two pairs of pliers, and two screwdrivers among other equipment,” Owoyesigyire said in a Tuesday police statement.
He further noted that a joint bolt cutter, a master key for vehicle ignition, two pieces of hooking wires, television remotes, and a wireless microphone were also recovered, all of which have been taken as exhibits.
“These exhibits are suspected to have been used in various robberies and the subsequent attacks reported by many victims at Mukono police division headquarters and other police posts,” Oweyesigyire noted.
He also explained that the recovered items are being examined by forensic experts to establish the owners and whether they were used for any robbery incidents reported within the district.
“The gun has been submitted to our forensic experts to establish whether it was the one used in the robbery of the recent attack on the supermarket in Mukono, where one person was injured,” he explained.
“Several suspects have been arrested and they are being processed through the systems. Their details will be availed as soon as the investigations are done,” he concluded.
