OREGON 2022: Halimah Nakaayi bows out with dismal performance in 800m Semis

Nakaayi finished 8th in Heat 3 with a time of 2:01.05, in a race that was won by Olympic Champion Athing Mu of the United States finishing the two-lap race with a time of 1:58.12.

Ugandan middle distance runner Halimah Nakaayi will not be able to defend her 2019 world title after missing out on a place in the Women’s 800m final at the the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Eugene.

Nakaayi finished 8th in Heat 3 with a time of 2:01.05, in a race that was won by Olympic Champion Athing Mu of the United States finishing the two-lap race with a time of 1:58.12.

Ethiopian runner Diribe Welteji of Ethiopia came second to book a place in the final scheduled for Sunday, July 24, the last day of the Championships.

Nakaayi has struggled to hit the form that saw her drive to the 2019 global title since suffering a knee injury last year. She also missed out in a place in Tokyo Olympic final and will now turn her focus to the Commonwealth Games.

She now changes focus to the Commonwealth Games that start next month in Birmingham, Britain.

Uganda’s last hope for a medal will come from Joshua Cheptegei and Oscar Chelimo who will compete in the 5000-meter finals on Sunday morning.
