Five arrested over rising robberies in Mubende

The suspects were arrested following an intelligence operation in Kibaati Village, Kasana Ward in East Division, Mubende District.

MUBENDE, UGANDA: The Police in Mubende have arrested five people to help in the going investigations and crackdown on the sequence of robberies in the district.

The suspects were arrested following an intelligence operation in Kibaati Village, Kasana Ward in East Division, Mubende District.

It is alleged that the suspects who the Police are yet to identify in order not to jeopardize the ongoing investigations have been participating in a series of robberies reported in the area.

According to the Police, upon searching their residence, the suspects were found with several house breaking implements, a toy gun and two pairs of army uniforms.

Wamala Region Police Spokesperson, Rachael Kawala confirmed the arrests saying that the Police have preferred charges of being in possession of government stores, suspected stolen property and breaking implements against the five suspects.

“Charges of aggravated robbery against the same suspects have been pending at various Police stations amid ongoing operations to crackdown and investigations into the matter,” says Kawala.

Kawala explains that in April this year, the Police arrested six people in connection with the robberies on Mityana-Mubende Highway robberies.  The Police said that the group was masquerading either as Police or army officers on lawful duty to their unsuspecting victims.

According to the Police, in one of the robberies on January 23rd this year at Bamunanika village on Mubende – Kampala highway, the suspected robbers while dressed in army uniforms and armed with toy guns, machetes and hammers, mounted a fake roadblock and robbed occupants of a Fuso truck that was loaded with maize.
