KYOTERA: Science teacher robbed, killed moments after receiving August salary

Another eyewitness said that Otaka had been bragging about the salary increment he had received and told any one who cared to listen that he had all the rights to spend his money however he wanted.

KYOTERA, UGANDA: The Police in Kyotera is investigating the circumstances under which a science teacher at one of the schools in the district was attacked and killed by unknown individuals after a night out drinking.

The deceased, identified as Otaka Robert, a Physics and Chemistry teacher who also doubled as laboratory technician at Nakasoga secondary school in Nabigasa sub county.

The victim is said to have been assaulted by the unknown thugs on Sunday night and was admitted to Kalisizo hospital on Monday morning where he succumbed to the injuries shortly uppon arrival.

According to Kyotera District Police Commander, Hassan Hiwumbire, they are yet to arrest any suspects in the case.
“We are doing our part of the investigation. No one has a right to beat up others. It seems the intention of the attackers was to rob him and we are going to arrest them,” he explained.

Eye witnesses said that Otaka was attacked by thugs who trailed him from a local drinking joint in Byerima trading centre which he had usually visited on the weekend, according to witnesses, but this time went on a spending spree buying alcohol for everyone around him.

It is alleged that his attackers were tempted by this behaviour and followed him to rob him. When they discovered that he did not have cash on him, they beat into telling them his mobile money account pin. It is said that they made off with Shs1.5 million.

“We are told that Mr Otaka splashed money in the drinking joint which tempted some youths to follow him as he retired to his home. His attackers reportedly asked for hard cash which he didn’t have at the moment. Thy then beat him as they demanded for his mobile money PIN. The assailants reportedly withdrew Shs1.5 million which was part of the salary he had just received,” said Siraje Ssenyonga, a head teacher at one of the neighboring primary schools.

Another eyewitness said that Otaka had been bragging about the salary increment he had received and told any one who cared to listen that he had all the rights to spend his money however he wanted.

The head teacher of the school where Otaka was teaching, Hamza Ssendagire, said that they have lost an educator who has been instrumental in helping students.

“He has died at a time we needed him most. Our candidates will be sitting their national examinations starting next month and he has been the one taking them through the practical lessons,” he said.

However, Ssendagire noted that the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) has been notified to find another teacher for the vacancy.

The Kyotera district CAO, Gabriel Rogers Bwayo, said that they are working with police to investigate the loss of their employee and that they will handle replacement administratively.
