TEREGO, UGANDA: The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has arrested two health officials attached to Terego District Local Government over allegedly soliciting sh5.3m from a contractor.
The two officials identified as Ms. Viola Bako and Mr. William Bayo were arrested alongside Yeku Masanja, the AIDS Support Organisation (TASO) coordinator.
The IG’s spokesperson, Ali Munira, said the suspects now in custody at Arua police station were arrested on Saturday from Frabrica hotel in Arua after receiving part of the money.
The health workers, according to Ms. Munira purportedly solicited a kickback from a supplier of food for the training of health teams in Terego district, claiming to have assisted the latter to get the contract.
“The total contract price was sh16m while the alleged kickback demanded was sh5.3m,” Ms. Munira said, adding that these will next week appear at the Anti-Corruption Court in Kololo, Kampala to answer their charges.
“Such acts make the government pay more for any services, and thus makes the total cost for dealing with government very high,” Ms. Munira bemoaned.
