One killed, four injured in Koboko explosion

The incident occurred on Saturday, September 10, at Sinyani River in Lipa cell in Mego ward, Koboko South division in Koboko municipality at about 3:00pm when the children went to fetch water from the river.

KOBOKO, UGANDA: One person was left dead and four others injured after an explosion suspected to be that of a grenade rocked Koboko municipality over the weekend.

The incident occurred on Saturday, September 10, at Sinyani River in Lipa cell in Mego ward, Koboko South division in Koboko municipality at about 3:00pm when the children went to fetch water from the river.

The deceased identified as Jamal Aliga, 14, was the son of Lega Yasin a resident of the same area died on the spot following the incident.

Other victims who sustained multiple injuries are brothers of the deceased who include Happy Yusuf, 10; Lucky Yasir, 11, Raiyisi Mudasir, 9; Sharif Gift, 7 and all are currently admitted at Koboko General Hospital.

One of the survivors, Happy Yusuf narrated that while at the river, he saw a sharp pointed metallic device with timbered and hollowed bottom connected to a thread under a rock they were standing on while fetching the water and removed it.

One of his colleagues snatched it from his hand claiming it was a microphone and started hitting it on a stone.

They immediately realised the metal was heating up and smoke coming out and exploded as it was being thrown away.

According to West Nile region Police spokesperson Josephine Angucia, a team of detectives, scene of crime officers and a UPDF staff visited the scene upon getting information, conducted investigations and recovered fragments from the blast, as well as documented findings.
