KAMPALA, UGANDA: The Police Special Investigations Division in Kireka has commenced investigations into the alleged death threats directed towards Speaker Anita Among.
The development comes after Speaker Among last week told parliament that her life was in danger, after receiving multiple death threats from unknown people and that her security detail was also being trailed.
Addressing journalists on Monday afternoon, Police Spokesperson, SCP Fred Enanga said a team of criminal investigations experts had taken up the matter to investigate the extent of the death threats.
“This is now a police matter that is being actively investigated by the Special Investigations Division in Kireka. The position of the speaker of parliament is very important a very important position that would have enormous consequences to the country and to parliamentarians if any risks occurred,” Enanga said.
Enanga explained that the joint force team are working with the office of the speaker to identify the source of the threats directed to Among but insisted it will be a protected investigation where security will not divulge information regarding their work.
Enanga, however, said further details will not be divulged saying it could jeopardize ongoing investigations.
“We shall not elaborate about when and how these threats were made until we have thoroughly come out with findings. We know there is much interest from the media who may want to get inch by inch information about the investigations but we know it can easily compromise the investigative strategy we have and also the cooperation of witnesses,” he said.
