Police arrest ring leader of “Ekigari gang” behind spate of robberies at music concerts

Enanga explained that the suspect and six hardcore deputies who have been identified but are still at large participated in the attack against the GISO Kyebando.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police in Kampala Metropolitan have in custody one Darren Kabuye, the ring leader of the notorious “Ekigari criminal gang” terrorizing fans, revellers, and well-wishers at music concerts and major events robbing them of their valuable items like phones, wallets, purses, handbags, and other valuables.

The police spokesperson Mr Fred Enanga said, Kabuye, aka Mukisa Henry, is also behind the wave of smash and grab attacks, knives, metallic bar-related armed robberies, and sexual assaults against women in Kawempe Division.

“Of recent, they have been attacking pedestrians and motorists with pavers, hitting them hard and robbing them of their property. The gang is responsible for all phones and bag snatches along Gayaza road, Tula road, and around Akamwesi mall,” Enanga said in a Monday police statement.

He further explained that the suspect and six hardcore deputies who have been identified but are still at large participated in the attack against the GISO Kyebando.

“On the 20.03.2022, at around 10 pm, the suspect with his gang, attacked the GISO Kyebando, Kasule Ben, while responding to a phone snatching incident at Akwamwesi Mall, along Gayaza road. It was a revenge attack on security personnel. They also damaged his motorcycle,” he said.

Enanga also stated that the same Ekigari criminal gang on September 20, while at Kakungulu zone, Kyebando parish, Kawempe division, Kampala district, ordered two laptops at Shs1.2m each, an iPhone at Shs1m, a board cover of Shs10,000, a laptop bag of Shs250,000, but later turned against the delivery boys and stole the items from them.

“Two workers, namely, Nsubuga Hamza and Kiganda Alex of Fruitshop Uganda located in Nalubega complex, delivered the items following a phone call and directives to Bwaise-Kawempe.

“Upon reaching Bwaise, the caller again directed them to Akamwesi mall, then Kakungula zone, via Lumansi road, to the offices of the Electoral Commission Kawempe. When they reached the place, the alleged clients switched off their phones, and in the process, a gang of eight thugs, including Darren, attacked and sprayed pepper spray in the faces of the victims and robbed them of the bag containing the electronic gadgets,” said Enanga.

Meanwhile, the police searched his known premises and he found metallic bars, opium, and heavy jackets used in the spate of robberies.

“As we intensify our efforts in dismantling this destructive gang, we call upon any victims who could have been mugged, attacked, robbed, or sexually assaulted by Kabuye Darren aka Mukisa Henry, to share details with the police at Kawempe,” he said.
