UPDF soldier arrested after Petrocity manager shot dead in Bukedea armed robbery

According to preliminary police investigations, the attackers first disarmed the security guard on duty at the petrol station and used his gun to execute their mission.

BUKEDEA, UGANDA: Police in Bukedea have arrested a UPDF soldier linked to an aggravated robbery incident that left at least one person dead and two others are injured after armed robbers raided Bukedea Petro City filling station last weekend and made away with millions of money in cash.

The robbery incident happened on Sunday night, September 25, 2022, at Petro City Gas Station in Bukedea town.

Police identified the deceased as Dan Esipan the manager of the station, while the two other victims currently nursing wounds at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital are; Ivan Masete, the security guard at the station, and the pump attendant only identified as Tom.

According to preliminary police investigations, the attackers first disarmed the security guard on duty at the petrol station and used his gun to execute their mission at around 9pm on Sunday night when most businesses in the neighbourhood had closed shop.

The East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, Mr Oscar Greg Ageca said the assailants after getting the gun, shot at the three staff injuring them In the process before fleeing with their mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money.

“The territorial police in Bukedea District registered a case of aggravated robbery of mobile phones, money and murder at Bukedea petro city petrol filling station where three people were shot at around 9pm vide Case Ref. 34/25/9/2022 of Bukedea Central Police station,” he said.

He added that the manager, unfortunately, succumbed to the injuries on his way to the hospital while the two are now admitted at the same facility nursing critical injuries.

“We immediately responded to the incident, rushed the three victims to Bukedea health center for first aid before they were later referred to Mbale regional referral Hospital for better medication, unfortunately, Dan, the manager of the petrol station died on the way to the hospital,” he said.

According to Ageca, the Police have so far arrested one suspect identified as Lawrence Otingole, a soldier at the 41st Battalion in Moroto.

He added that the assailants after making away with their prey abandoned the gun used in the aggravated robbery and police have since launched investigations into the matter.

“We ask and seek for calm as investigations are underway and ask the public not to try and access the incident scene as it is cordoned off and access limited to those concerned with the investigative process”, he said.
