UNRA police officers arrested for shooting civilian in Wakiso

The victim has been identified as Violet Nansereko currently admitted at Mulago Hospital nursing injuries she sustained in the shooting incident.

WAKISO, UGANDA: The territorial police in Wakiso district have arrested two police officers attached to the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) for allegedly shooting at a civilian during an operation last evening.

The suspects currently in police custody are PC Elisa Muhumuza and Evelyn Akello, while the victim has been identified as Violet Nansereko currently admitted at Mulago Hospital nursing injuries she sustained in the shooting incident.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, “It’s alleged that on Wednesday, September 28, at about 4 pm while they were carrying out UNRA operations in Wakiso, the duo pursued a vehicle belonging to one Eriya Twasse and in the pursuit they discharged some bullets which critically injured one person identified as Violet Nansereko. The victim is currently admitted at Mulago hospital.”

Owoyesigyire in a police statement said investigations to ascertain circumstances that led to the shooting have ensued.

“We have ascertained that gunshots were fired by PC Muhumuza and more details will be available as soon as possible. The circumstances that led to all this are under investigation and the gun that is believed to have been used in the shooting was also gotten and exhibited.” he said.

A drone motor vehicle registration number UBJ 885Q that was being used by the enforcement team from UNRA has also been impounded.
