KAMPALA, UGANDA: The Uganda Traffic Police has released a video compilation of CCTV footage showing accidents involving commercial vehicles and trailers recorded in Kampala and its suburbs in the last two weeks of September.
In the new video released on Thursday, October 9, the Traffic Police spokesperson Ms Faridah Nampiima cautioned road users especially drivers of commercial vehicles to always be mindful of the load they carry and speed at which they drive to avoid such accidents and loss of people’s lives.
“All drivers of commercial vehicles should always mind the speed at which they approach the roundabout, mind the load they carry and also mind about other road users,” Ms Nampiima said accompanying the video.
The majority of the video shows how reckless drivers and overloading of trucks were solely to blame for the accidents, while other parts of the video show errant drivers losing control of the vehicles and crashing into the roadside structures including shops and houses.

The Police in a move to caution road users last month started a campaign in which it will periodically show footage of reckless driving by motorists captured on the CCTV Cameras pinned all over the city and the metropolitan area.

In the 2021 Annual Crime and Traffic/Road Safety Report that was released in May this year, of the 4,159 road accident fatalities countrywide, 1,390 were motorcyclists, while 528 were passengers on motorcycles.
According to the report, there were 17443 road accidents reported in 2021, an increase of 42% from the 12249 reported the previous year.
A survey by Uganda Road Fund also indicated that only one in every 10 riders received riding training from a professional instructor.
