WATCH: Houses, Shops, Bars burnt in Kiwatule Market Fire

The massive blaze which broke out on Thursday, October 6, at around 9 am has left millions of property burnt to ashes despite efforts by the locals to put the fire out of action.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Residents and traders of Kiwatule in Nakawa Division are counting losses after a fire outbreak the central market destroyed merchandise, houses, bars and shops.

The massive fire whose cause was yet to be established broke out on Thursday morning at around 10:30 am with property worthy millions burnt to ashes despite efforts by the locals to put the fire out of action.

By around 11 am, some owners of the properties were seen by this reporter rushing to save some of their belongings in the burning structure but only little could be saved due to the magnitude of the fire.

DailyExpress understands that some of the burnt structures include a church building, video/cinema halls, kiosks, bars, among others.

The police deputy director of the fire prevention and rescue service, Mr Hassan Kihanda confirmed the incident and said the situation was now under control after a tip-off from the local authorities.

“Well, we received a call about a fire outbreak in Kiwatule and our team went there. We are in touch with them, they say the situation is under control,” Kihanda said.

Police was yet to issue an official statement on the incident and cause of the fire at the time of filing this story, although some of the residents cited foul play as the place was set to be cleared for a new construction by an unnamed businessman.
