DUBAI, UAE: The National Unity Platform (NUP) President Mr Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine Saturday claimed he had been arrested in Dubai, United Arab Emirates just hours ahead of his charity concert.

In a tweet via his personal verified Twitter account, Bobi said he was arrested as soon as he landed at the Airport in Dubai, at around 8:30pm and he was grilled for over eight hours with his phone and passport confiscated.

This website could not immediately verify the claims from the opposition leader and why he must have been detained but the musician turned politician asserted in a Twitter post that authorities behind his arrested questioned him about NUP, its leaders, their phone numbers, his family members and their contacts before his phone and passport were returned.

“Landed in Dubai at 8:30pm. It’s now 5am. I’ve been held & interrogated for 8hrs. They asked me about NUP, its leaders, their phone numbers, my family members & their contacts! I have all necessary travel docs. They’ve confiscated my passport & my phone. Am literary under arrest,” readsa tweet on his official personal account @HEBobiWine posted at 4:09am on Saturday Octber 08, 2022.

Kyagulanyi later an hour added “In Dubai to perform at a charity concert to assist some of the Ugandan immigrant workers. Been held at the airport for almost 10 hours, being interrogated mostly about NUP! My phone and passport have now been returned. Hopefully things go as planned. Will give an update.”

However, earlier today morning, Bobi again tweeted that after hours of interrogation by authorities in Dubai, he has been freed, before asserting that his detention was allegedly based on his concert which has since been given a green light.

“After 12 hrs, (8:30 pm to 9:30 am) I’ve been finally allowed into Dubai. Hoping that our charity concert, which seemed to be the source of these issues, will be allowed to proceed. We’re only trying to raise awareness and assist the many Ugandan and African Immigrant workers.” Bobi tweeted at around 10am today morning.

Bobi Wine is set to hold a concert in Dubai this weekend with intent to help Ugandans stranded in the Middle East country return home comes amid growing complaints of mistreatment the immigrant workers at their workplaces.

He becomes the second Ugandan Opposition politician to be held in another country in less than two weeks after Mr Chapa Karuhanga, a founding member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) was on September 29 detained in an immigration facility in Dar es Salam, Tanzania over unclear cases.
