Anti-Corruption Unit arrests five Bunyangabu district officials arrested over corruption

The former Kabonero Sub-county Chief, Elon Rugumba, was also arrested for the shoddy construction of the Kabonero police offices/cells. The right procurement procedure was not followed hence causing the government a loss of over Shs5.8M.

BUNYANGABU, UGANDA: The State House Anti-Corruption Unit together with the police in Bunyangabu have arrested five district officials over alleged corruption.

Among the arrested officials is Principal Human Resource Officer (HRO), Ms Ikiriza Lucy who was arrested for fraudulently enrolling three teachers on the district payroll without verifying their appointments with the Education Service Commission.

Others are; the Chief Finance Office (CFO), Basaliza Joseph, District Production Officer, Yusta Asiimwe, and the Agricultural Officer, Tumwesigye Gerald. These were arrested for mismanaging over Shs90m meant for the Agricultural Cluster Development Project to improve the coffee and maize value chain.

On October 8, 2022, the unit arraigned Agaba AbduKarim, a real estate dealer, before the Chief Magistrates Court Entebbe on charges of obtaining money by false pretence, forcible detainer and theft.

The accused allegedly defrauded Shs120m from the complainant claiming to be selling to her land located in Sekiwunga Busiro, Wakiso District whereas not.

He further stole a container valued at Shs7m that the complainant had placed in her land. He was remanded till October 21, 2022.

Since 2021, Government has lost over Shs50m as a result of their irregular appointments. The teachers are still at large.
