11 dead, 6 injured as fire guts Salama School for the Blind in Mukono

MUKONO, UGANDA: At least 11 pupils at Salama School of the Blind in Mukono are confirmed dead and 6 others injured after a fire whose cause is yet to be established gutted the school dormitory last night.

Reports say the girls’ dormitory was destroyed by the fire, which started around 2 am, in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

According to Mukono Division Police Commander, Ms Annabelle Nyinamahoro, at the time of the fire incident, there were 17 children in the hostel but only six were rescued and rushed to Herona hospital.

She further noted that police had already condoned off the school to start investigations while the victims were yet to be identified.

When reached out for a comment, the administration was reserved despite parents and guardians flocking the school premises to rescue their children.

Established in 1999, Salama School for the Blind is located in Mpumu Ward of Kisoga Town Council in Mukono, about 25 kilometres from the country’s capital city, Kampala.

This residential school has a current enrollment of 92 children and young adults – 44 boys and 48 girls – ranging in age from six to 25 years. For the most part, the school’s physical structure has been well maintained.
