Police probe violent attack on NRM’s Majjambere at Jakana’s Burial

According to police, the burial process that was progressing well with tributes in memory of the late Jakana was disrupted when NUP activists started chanting party slogans at the funeral.

NAKASEKE, UGANDA: The Territorial police in Savana region and Nakaseke have instituted inquiries into the ugly incident of violence, which occurred during the burial of Suleiman Jakana Nadduli, the son of former Minister and Luwero District LC5 Chairperson Hajj Abdul Nadduli.

The incident happened on Monday (yesterday) at around 5 pm at Kadunda village, Kisimula parish, Kapeeka sub-county, in Nakaseke District.

According to police, the burial process that was progressing well with tributes in memory of the late Jakana was disrupted when NUP activists started chanting party slogans at the funeral.

“Their actions escalated into a violent attack and assault on Mpologoma Majjambere, an NRM political activist, who attempted to stop them from politicizing the funeral. The victim was roughed up and repeatedly hit with chairs and blunt objects before sympathizers came to his rescue. Several video clips showing how the victim was violently beaten, have been retrieved,” Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

Enanga explained that such violent and disruptive behaviours during funerals majorly by opposition activists is becoming common and called upon individuals and political groups, to stop such inhuman behaviours at funerals.

“We want to warn all individuals and groups that continue to glorify and instruct their radical supporters, into creating violence at funerals and other public events, that we shall pursue and bring them to justice,” he said.

The police spokesman further noted that a serious manhunt is on for individuals who appeared in the video roughing up on the NRM activist and promised to serve justice against them once arrested.

“For those who perpetrated violence during the funeral, we wish to inform them that there actions were unjustified and uncalled for. As a result, a serious manhunt for all of them has begun. We shall not rest until when they are brought to book,” he explained.

The victim of the violent attack who is currently admitted at Nakasero Hospital has also been visited by investigators from police to get his side of the story as probe into the matter continues.

Luckily, the nature and description of his injuries according to police is not that worrying and this will aid in fastening the investigations.
