Errant driver arrested after knocking policeman dead in Bwaise

KAMPALA, UGANDA: The police at Natete have arrested a driver of a Fuso truck who knocked two police officers, killing one instantly and leaving the other severely injured in a nasty motor crash in Kampala.

The accident happened in the wee hours of Saturday morning at around 4 am in Bwaise, Kawempe division.

The deceased officer has been identified as Constable Sam Bazibu while the injured officer is Constable Brenda Nabifo, both attached to Kawempe division police in Kampala.

According to KMP deputy spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the officers were reportedly doing patrol on a motorcycle registration number UP 7866 at Bwaise when a motor vehicle Registration UAM 809L Fuso rammed them and kept going.

“It is alleged that while Police Constable Bazibu and his colleague 77149 Police Constable Nabifo Brenda were on Motorcycle Registration Number UP 7866 at Bwaise doing Patrol, motor vehicle Registration UAM 809L Fuso knocked them and kept going,” Owoyesigyire said in a Saturday statement.

He added the driver was arrested at Natete, about six kilometres away from the accident scene and is currently being detained at Natete Police Station, with the Fuso truck as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been conveyed to the city mortuary Mulago for Post mortem while the colleague is currently receiving treatment at Mulago for injuries sustained.

“We would like to convey our Condolences to the family of the deceased officer. While the Police investigate the matter to its logical conclusion, the police at Kampala Metropolitan will see to it that the deceased officer receives a proper send-off,” concluded Owoyesigyire.
